Since 2006 more than 50 finance companies have collapsed or defaulted stripping thousands of Kiwis on the verge of retirement of their savings. A concern for the Government is that these New Zealanders will not be able to pay for their aged care.
Each district health board pays for its elderly to live in residential care such as a rest home if they require it. In the Waikato, about one third of residents pay for the care themselves, one third are subsidised and the other third are paid for by the DHB and patients’ superannuation.
In Hamilton, the daily cost of age-related residential care is: rest home, $105; dementia care, $142; residential hospital, $179; psychogeriatric, $199.
This costs the region’s health board $64 million a year. The board also spent $12.29 million on in-patient assessment, transition and rehabilitation services, $16.8 million on home and community support services and $1.57 million on respite care.
Of the total $102 million, $18.3 million worth of services were provided by Health Waikato, and the balance was provided by 65 non-government organisations.
The spending was 10.3 per cent of the total Waikato DHB . The over-65 population is projected to increase by more than 16,500 people, from 52,000 people .$102 million was spent annually in the Waikato region on aged care now to almost 69,000 people in 2021.
The over-85 population would increase by more than 2000 during the same time.l

AGED CARE COST
* Older people’s services cost Waikato DHB $102 million annually
* $64 million of this covers rest homes, hospitals, and dementia facilities.
* Over-65s predicted to be one in five in 10 to 20 years.

The dilemma we as a country now face is that there is not enough money available to provide services on a continual basis for this vulnerable sector of society. At Supercare4u.com we find that being able to offer non-medical emergency transportation at an affordable price compared to traditional ambulances is a positive step for future budgets. Although we are just a small boat in the ocean!

Ms Samson from Waitangirua, New Zealand requires a wheelchair due to a disability. They catch wheelchair-accessible buses near their home up to four times a week for return trips into the Porirua CBD. Trouble is, many of the bus drivers are not sympathetic to their plight.
“Nine out of 10 drivers sit there and I have to get the ramp out, some of them don’t know how to use it. A few won’t even take us, saying they have schedules to keep and drive away. It’s frustrating, they’re not providing the service they should and just don’t seem to care.”

For clients experiencing difficulty with Disability Transport Services, there is a method for getting the info in front of the right people. Ring the Disability commissioner or complain to Land Transport.

New Zealand drivers should be afraid;in fact they should be very afraid because new technology will be trialled by the Police and used if it offers benefits to safe driving habits.
The world’s most advanced speed camera – so accurate it can catch you using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt from 600m away – is being assessed for Victoria,Australia.
The $18,500 Concept II laser speed camera is being used by police in Dorset,England,as the latest tool in their zero-tolerance approach to driving offences.
As well as checking speed, the device’s camera resolution is reported to be sharp enough to pick out an unbuckled belt at a range of up to 600m.
The camera is able to record both a still image and video evidence to DVD.
What the Concept II laser speed camera can do:
* Detects speed, seatbelt and mobile phone offenses
* Sharp enough to detect an unbuckled seatbelt at 600m
* Can store up to 4000 incidents on video
So do you think that this technology will make an appearance on our roads? Damm right it will !

Mental health is a major cost for for New Zealand.
Not only is there the immense personal cost to people with experience of mental illness and their families, there is also a cost to employers and the Government
Research in Britain, published in 2007, estimates the cost to employers of mental health problems among staff in Britain at 1035 (NZ$2000) for every employee a year. The business costs are made up of sickness absence, reduced productivity at work and replacing staff who leave their jobs because of mental ill health.
Just under 50 per cent of New Zealanders will experience mental illness or addiction at some time in their lives, with one in five people affected within one year. (source: Health Ministry.)
About 40 per cent of people off work nationwide are absent because of a mental health condition, including people on sickness benefits and income replacement insurance. (Workwise).
Mental illness accounts for 15 per cent of the total disease burden in the developed world, with depression set to become the second leading cause of disability worldwide by 2020. (World Health Organisation).
Supercare4u.com is a Patient Transfer Service in Auckland New Zealand that is dedicated to providing transfers to members of the community that are aged, infirm or have specialized transportation requirements.

The Total Mobility (TM) scheme is a national scheme that assists people with impairments to enhance their community participation by accessing appropriate transport. This assistance is provided to eligible, registered individuals in the form of subsidised door-to-door transport services wherever TM transport providers operate.

The TM scheme offers registered individuals a 50% discount (up to a maximum subsidy of $40.00 in the Auckland Region) on fares charged by contracted transport providers. To receive the discount, the individual must present their TM Photo Identification (ID) Card to the driver at the start of the trip so the correct tariff is selected for fare calculation. The individual is then required to have their TM Photo ID Card swiped at the end of the trip, and pay their 50% portion of the fare to the transport provider. In the Auckland region, Auckland Transport administers the scheme, with partial funding provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA)

Joining Total Mobility and using Transport Services:
For more information about the TM scheme in the Auckland Region and authorised TM agents, please phone the MAXX Contact Centre on (09) 366 6400.
SuperCare4u.com is a personalised Total Mobility Passenger Transportation System registered with Auckland Transport and offers a door-to-door, on-demand, pickup/drop-off service, 7 days a week, 365 days a year utilising vans fitted with wheelchair hoists. For reservations: 09 6302060

Eligibility
Basically, you’re eligible if physical, sensory, intellectual or psychological disability means that you can’t proceed to and from a public transport stop; or board, ride and disembark from the public transport unaided.
More information
To register and receive a TM Photo ID Card, please follow the steps below:

Step 1 – Contacting a TM disability agency to discuss eligibility and to arrange an eligibility assessment
The disability agency will ask the applicant a series of questions about their impairment to determine their eligibility, and if they consider that the applicant is likely to be eligible, an appointment with a trained Assessment Facilitator will be made for the assessment to take place.

Step 2 – Completing the eligibility assessment and the registration forms
The assessment must take place face to face with the applicant and Assessment Facilitator filling out the registration forms together. If the Assessment Facilitator determines that the applicant is eligible, the assessment form must be signed by both the Assessment Facilitator and the applicant, and the Photo ID Card form must be signed by the applicant.

Step 3 – Submitting the registration forms, photo and card issue fee
The assessment form and Photo ID Card form should be returned to the disability agency with the appropriate payment. This may include a disability agency membership fee and an assessment fee, although some agencies do not charge these. The payment will always include a card issue fee of $7.00 to cover the administration and production costs of the Photo ID Card (payable to Auckland Transport). The disability agency will review the registration forms and forward them to Auckland Transport with the card issue fee. Once the registration has been approved and processed by Auckland Transport, the applicant will receive a letter from them confirming their registration. The Photo ID Card will normally be received by the applicant within 10 working days, with a letter about the rules of the TM scheme and how to use the TM Photo ID Card.
